Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a guest on Countdown. She is the daughter of writer and presenter Janet Ellis, herself a Dictionary Corner debut guest only a few weeks earlier. Sophie is a musician who started out as lead singer of an indie-rock band called Theaudience, before finding much greater fame as a solo artist.
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns of 2020, she briefly returned to prominence with her viral kitchen disco videos. However, it was in late-2023, after the release of the movie Saltburn in which her 2001 single Murder on the Dancefloor was used, that she gained a resurgence in fame and she has since returned to the performing scene. More recently, she has replaced Ncuti Gatwa in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest as the United Kingdom's spokesperson.
