Episode 1848 was broadcast on 30 September 1996, and was the first quarter-final of Championship of Champions VIII. It marked the beginning of Series 33, a three-month search for the show's Supreme Champion.

Alan Sinclair played Chris Rogers, with Chris Rogers winning 60 – 32. The Dictionary Corner guest was Jan Harvey, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.
