Peter Newby (born 1945) is a word puzzle expert, who has written many books on the subject. He first became known to Countdown producer John Meade when he brought a coach-load of Scrabble enthusiasts to watch the Series 1 final. He has attended several finals since, and has also been an invited guest on special episodes, such as Episode 495.

Peter went on to collaborate with John on the books The Complete Countdown Companion in 1990 and the first Countdown Puzzle Book in 1991.

According to The Complete Countdown Companion he has two famous sons, but the book doesn't say who they are.
