He is also a competitive [[Scrabble]] player and in 2016 attended his first two Scrabble tournaments: the Rotary Open Scrabble Championship of Wiltshire, held on the outskirts of Swindon, followed by Nailsea in Somerset. He competed in division B on both occasions and finished 17th out of 18 and 6th out of 20 respectively. In Nailsea he won a “ratings prize” of £10, having gained more ratings points than anyone else in his division. Philip Aston is a regular Apterite who made his online tournament debut in the sixth edition of AptoSOS against the event's organiser Matt Morrison, losing his only game by four points. He will appear on the show in Series 78.

Prior to appearing on the show, Aston made his tournament Scrabble debut at the 2016 Rotary Open Scrabble Championship of Wiltshire, for a chance to qualify for the National Scrabble Championship finals. He was 2nd in Division B after three games, but crashed to 17th (second to last!) four games later.
