Episode 6987 was broadcast on 11 January 2019, and was the eighth preliminary of Championship of Champions XV.

This episode was transmitted on Rachel Riley's birthday, and was also the one closest to the tenth anniversary of the broadcast of her first Countdown episode. Susie Dent mentioned the occasion during her Origins of Words spot, presenting Riley with flowers. A more elaborate celebration took place just under seven months later in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 18, Episode 3.
