Chris, you can sign your posts with ~~~~ instead of typing it out longhand. :-) Countdown Kid 21:51, 27 June 2009 (BST)
- I normally do! I'd tried to make it look cooler as per my signature on Wikipedia, but didn't realise that the substitution template which I use to do that on Wikipedia doesn't exist on The Countdown Wiki.
- So I ended up looking like a tit. Yours with four tildes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 21:57, 27 June 2009 (BST)

I agree with Howard, I think you'd do a great job with the Wednesday recaps. Countdown Kid 13:17, 28 June 2009 (BST)

Partial recaps
Hi, I've noticed that you've removed a few episode pages from Category:Partial recaps. Please don't do so without checking that all the game data is there. Check that there is the full number of rounds for the format in use at the time. Check that every letters or numbers round includes both contestants' declarations (or a dash wherever there was no declaration). Check that the numbers rounds include the contestants' solutions where required by the game, and not just the declarations. -- Smjg 17:11, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Stewart,
- Thanks for your message. I am a little confused as to where I have gone wrong - could you clarify which recaps I have removed from Category:Partial recaps in error? As far I am aware, I have only ever removed the rounds to check template from those recaps which I have personally gone through and compared to the original textual recap on the Countdown Database, round by round, with every single detail in place. With almost no exceptions, I've always highlighted recaps combed through in this way with the edit summary "Checked against the original recap."
- I'm not disputing that I might have made an error - I've checked so many recaps I probably have done one or two on autopilot - but perhaps you might just show me the specific edit(s) which you dispute.
- Thanks in advance, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 22:04, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- The ones I've noticed are ones where the category was added manually, not using the recap checking templates. Specifically, Episode 1868 and Episode 2162. As you'll see, the contestants' solutions to the numbers rounds are among the information missing from these. -- Smjg 00:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- You're quite right, what a cock-up. Sorry mate! It won't happen again. -- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 11:06, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Tournaments
A while ago I mooted the idea of having a little Upcoming Tournaments box on the front page, so that people can just refer to the Wiki when they want to know if there is anything in which they can take part. Now that you are an editor, what do you think about this? There is still a little bit of space in the corner of the front page which would be ideal. Vande 11:14, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- That sounds like a great idea to me - I'll put the information up when I next change the front page, which will be going into December. I can't see anyone higher than me objecting to such a useful resource. Perhaps you could give me a list of upcoming tournaments so that they're all in one place for me?
- Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 11:30, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks Crispy! There is a new tournament idea being mooted by the organizer of CoLei, Jeff Clayton. This would be around April time, and would a kind of Masters tournament, and a more formal affair. This is yet to be named. He has also confirmed CoLei3 for around October time. These are all I know of at the moment, but talking briefly to Ben last week, it sounded like he might be doing CONOT again too. Not sure if CoBris will come back, as it was going to this year and then didn't in the end.
- Best wishes, Vande 11:51, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- I've created a template called Template:Upcoming Tournaments, which will be locked in due course as it will appear on the front page. For now, perhaps you could help me to start populating it with those tournaments we do know about. -- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 11:54, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Front Page
Well done with the changes! I've just read the trailer for forthcoming Co-events, and noticed that you've linked to the wrong St Hughs church in Lincoln. CoLin is at St Hughs in North Hykeham, not St Hughs in cental Lincoln. Drawoh 10:00, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Howard, and thanks for letting me know about the erroneous web address for St. Hugh's Church which I've now fixed. Are there any other tournaments on the horizon which could be added? Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 19:31, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- That's better :) I'm not aware of any other Co-events scheduled. In fact I don't think that it's often that there's more than one actually scheduled. More are certainly being discussed, but I don't believe there are any dates yet for CoNot 2010 or CoLei 2010 (or any others). Drawoh 20:17, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- Similar to what I said in the Tournaments section above then! --Vande 21:11, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't mean to undermine you on my talk page, mate - I can only blame tiredness! :-) -- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 22:01, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- That's okay, mate, I didn't take it personally. There's a lot worse on the forum :-) --Vande 22:14, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- Well done with the front page changes for February. One more - CoLin is no longer a forthcoming event! --Drawoh 19:19, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- If you spot the rest of my brain somewhere around these parts perhaps you would be so kind as to let me know? ;-) Thanks for letting me know, mate! -- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 19:34, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Strange how the whole section disappears when the tournament itself is deleted, but I suppose it doesn't matter. --Vande 20:43, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Losing the heading when the box is empty was purely a stylistic decision. It's easy enough to either have just the heading, although I thought that might look somewhat incomplete. Perhaps what we need is either:
- A stopgap message along the lines of "No new tournaments have been announced at this time. Please check back soon."
- Details of a hitherto unannounced tournament.
- Any preference? Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 07:07, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I would certainly prefer for the box to be there all the time, so that people become accustomed to seeing it. If it keeps disappearing, people are likely to forget about it. I think your stopgap message works well, although with the current thirst for extra tournaments to be added to the calendar, it is likely that it wouldn't stay that way very long :-) Best wishes, --Vande 09:37, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Agree with you both. I'd prefer the box to be there, even if empty. And a default message on the lines you suggest, Crispy, sounds ideal. Could also include forthcoming Apterous tournaments. --Drawoh 15:20, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Please let me know of any forthcoming Apterous tournaments and I'll add them to the box.
- Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 20:58, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- By coincidence, Apterous Masters 2010 was announced this evening. [1]--Drawoh 23:48, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
'Save page' vs. 'Show preview'
Hi Countdowner,
Thanks for your interest in and contributions to this Wiki. Whilst your enthusiasm is undoubted and very much appreciated, I've noticed that when you're editing a particular page, you have a habit of making many small changes and saving the page in between. Whilst this ensures that your work is not lost, working in this manner has the effect of clogging up the list of recent changes - at the last count, 43 of the 50 most recent edits belonged to you, though you've only actually edited five pages!
Don't worry - I'm not telling you off and you've not really done anything wrong. It's just harder for other editors to track the changes made to the Wiki when there are so many from one person. In future, when you are making a series of edits to one page and you want to see how they look, please don't press the 'Save page' button every time. Instead, if you press the 'Show preview' button in between smaller edits you can build them up into one big edit and just press the 'Save page' button once at the end. This will keep the page history clearer and easier to read and avoids upsetting other editors.
I hope I've explained this clearly. If not, please feel free to leave me a message on my talk page.
Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 23:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for telling me about the recent changes mistake, it is just that on my view it says e.g. 27 changes or something like that. I did not think of other Countdowners' view. I didn't think your letter was threatening in any way I appreciate that.
- Best wishes, Countdowner 23:36 , 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi from me too. Can I add my welcome to that of Crispy. It's always good to see contributions from those who are keen. Everyone makes mistakes at times - we all do, and one of the benifits of Wikis which allow multiple editors is that when someone sees an entry that has been made incorrectly, it can be quickly corrected by anyone who notices it. So I hope that on the odd occasion that you've put something in wrongly, you'll not mind it being corrected. Good to see you here. Drawoh 05:34, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply, Countdowner. I hope you'll continue to enjoy contributing to the Wiki. Whilst I have your attention, you might like to know that there is a problem with your signature. When you type ~~~~, your username 'Countdowner' is not linked to your user page as you would expect. Instead, it goes to the Countdowner page, which is an automatic redirect to Contestant. To fix this, visit your preferences page and change the link in your signature from [[Countdowner]] to [[User:Countdowner|]]. This will give: Countdowner.

Featured Articles
Hello Crispy,
Could you give us some notification if there will be another featured article for august. As you will see on Countdown:Featured articles, I have made a few more proposals, going on the basis that they have the same amount of detail as Harvey Freeman, who went on to become an FA. I'm not going to start nagging about Scott Mearns, but I really do think he should be in there for August. Anyway, back to the point, and could you please tell us whether the will be another Featured Article for August 2010. Please. Please.
Yours Faithfully,
The Doctor 12:09, 12 July 2010 (BST)
- Try and avoid making such a mess around here, Doctor! ;-) I'd suggest the article for Scott Mearns has all of the content prerequisite for a featured article, but is let down by the general tone in places - i.e., it doesn't quite feel encyclopaedic. That said, there will definitely be a new FA for August, for which I will make preparations nearer the end of the month. I normally give articles a little proofread and a tidy during this process, but if you want to you are welcome to have a go at 'beefing it up' yourself.
- As an example, I can see immediately that the introductory paragraph needs extending. It needs to be longer than the Twitter-esque summary that it is at the moment, but not so long that it contains every fact from the body of the article. For a good example of the ideal length in my opinion, see the article for Stewart Holden.
- I hope this helps! Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 11:50, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- Where in the page? The Doctor 16:40, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- Oh, thanks truly. I am doing a "rewrite" "write" now (to use a Richard Whiteley style joke.) The Doctor 12:02, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- OH, DAMN IT! I was giving him a rewrite then I accidentally pressed Delete. [cries] The Doctor 12:12, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- OK, Chris, I've given him a rewrite. By the way, I added a totally Scott Mearns-unrealted comment on the featured articles page. Ryan Taylor, anyone? The Doctor 10:00, 15 July 2010 (BST)
- That's looking a lot better. I'll give it a once over myself as a second pair of eyes shortly before it goes up. Thanks for your hard work! Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 15:31, 17 July 2010 (BST)
12 round format
I only put this in because all the other formats have their own page. I thought it would be best to make up the set. The Doctor 13:44, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- That's fair enough, but I feel that just because there is a gap it doesn't mean it needs filling. As they say, a composition is not about the notes you use but rather the notes you leave out. I'll leave the page for a few days as I am happy to listen if anyone has a particularly strong reason for it to remain. Please don't take my actions on the wiki this afternoon as negative, by the way - your enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. I just have to keep an eye on things like consistency with other pages which are easily forgotten when you're passionately writing away. :-)
- Regards,
- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 16:47, 13 July 2010 (BST)
Sorry I'm having a few rants at you

Images
It says on your user page that you correct aspect ratio-altered images. Could you help me out with a contestant in either Series 60 or 61, Julie something? The Doctor 16:48, 13 July 2010 (BST)
- I suspect you'll come across a few on your travels if you're doing a lot of work on the wiki this week. Please let me know the exact name of the image (just wikilink it in the usual way, except preceding it with a colon - i.e., [[:Image:Filename.jpg]]) along with any others you come across, and I'll do them all in one foul swoop later in the week.
- Merci beaucoup,
- Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 16:52, 13 July 2010 (BST)

My Numerical Redirects
Howard has got it spot on. I did try your second suggestion, but it didn't work. I suppose, that's what you might call an epic fail. The Doctor 08:53, 14 July 2010 (BST)
- I think I've got a satisfactory solution to the Series 2 progress chart; it eliminates the need for either another template or the numeric redirects. See The Doctor's talk page.--Drawoh 09:32, 14 July 2010 (BST)
