Appearances
Series 44
David first appeared in June 2001, in the tail-end of the show's 44th series, first winning against John Hedges, following up with four additional wins before ultimately losing to Bruno Murray in a close 49-41 contest, after failing to crack the crucial conundrum IFUSECOAT. His performance was enough to warrant a place in the quarter-finals as the #6 seed, in which he was matched up against #3 seed, Stuart Wood, but was defeated 60-36, and Wood ultimately went on to win the series.
Series 90
Heat Games
More than two decades later, Roe returned to the show, facing Nigel Hutchinson, where he achieved a comfortable 22-point victory to take home a second teapot, despite being beaten to the buzzer in the conundrum. He then worked his way through seven more victories to reach his Octochamp tally of eight, with four centuries along the way, and guaranteed his return for the December finals through a dispatch of Hiral Varia in a very closely fought seventh game. He showed his skill and willingness to take risks in the numbers rounds; always picking 6S, 3L or 4L, and finished with a points tally of 809 as the provisional 3rd seed for the finals.
Finals
Ultimately returning as the fourth seed, his challenger was bookstore owner Alex Call, whom he eventually overpowered and triumphed over by a comfortable 30-point margin, despite Alex gaining some ground back by spotting the Darrenic QUILTERS near the end of the game. This meant David marched onto the semi-finals where No.1 seed Chris Kirby lay in wait for him.
Unfortunately, Chris's wordplay proved to be too powerful for David to overcome and the contest was over before the final numbers round; one of the unfortunate mistakes being a declaration of ☓ plankers in Round 10. David did finish with a flourish by cracking a trademark 6S numbers solution, and after neither player cracked the conundrum for the fifth time in a row in the finals, it meant David's second run on the show ended albeit at one stage higher than his Series 44 run, with 988 points from his Series 90 appearances.
Co-events
In 2010, he attended his first Co-event, COLIN 2010.
