Dave Cappleman was a finalist in Series 87. He is a retired Software Engineer and lay minister, as well an Apterite.
His wife Catriona, son Tom and daughter-in-law Ruth are all past Countdown winners.
He made his debut on 22 March 2023 against Matt Williams, winning with a score of 86 points to 72. From here, he won a further five games with two centuries and a personal best of 115 points, before being unseated in his seventh game by Gavin Finlay. However, with 621 points overall and in a series where octochamps hit a joint-record low in the 15-round format, Cappleman qualified for the Series 87 finals in June, where Apterite Cillian McMulkin lay waiting for him.
McMulkin roared off the blocks with a spot of RANTOONES for 9, but Cappleman made back some ground after Cillian's offer of scampie ☓ proved no good and the former offered the excellent GOODLIER. But McMulkin eventually sped off into the distance, confirming his victory before the last numbers round. After neither player turned CONTINUAL into INOCULANT, Dave bowed out with another defeat, with a still very respectable 81 points, and a final points tally of 702.
