Phil Watson was a contestant in Series 55 and is an alumnus of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. His greatest moment on Countdown came when he defeated top seed Steven Briers in a tense Series quarter-final. Watson then lost to Tony Warren in an even closer semi-final, as Warren spotted the crucial conundrum first.

Watson was noted particularly for announcing his words with a great conviction, which some found arrogant. Some viewers were offended by Phil Watson's demonstration of pride and greatness and chose to crumble in self-pity as he routinely slaughtered his opposition on the screen.
