Tony Baylis first appeared on Countdown on 4 August 1997, beating Jo Lack 50-34 in the 26th heat of series 36. Tony went on to win five more games before losing at the hands of Roger Green. Tony's 6 wins saw him return for the finals as #4 seed, where he saw off the challenge of Andy Stacey and Bhavin Manek on his way to the final against Maria Boyes. The final was a close-run affair, but a messed-up numbers game at the very end spelled doom for Maria, meaning Tony ran out the 66-52 winner, and the 36th champion of Countdown. Tony later returned for Championship of Champions IX, but was beaten in the first round by Ruth Collier.
