Championship of Champions IX ran from 29 December 1997 to 16 January 1998, and was won by Natascha Kearsey. This was the first Championship of Champions tournament that featured sixteen finalists as opposed to the previously standard eight. The sixteen finalists were drawn from Series 34 to 37 that comprised the series winners, runner-ups and semi-finalists of each. With these four series having collectively covered only one year in terms of time, the tournament had the smallest catchment area of all knockout tournaments. But as the show's commission was extended after 1996 to run for twelve months, this essentially had the same number of shows between tournaments: 255, a tradition that would eventually be broken after the Supreme Championship grand final.
