Championship of Champions IX ran from 29 December 1997 to 16 January 1998, and was won by Natascha Kearsey. It was the first CoC to feature sixteen contestants as opposed to the previously standard eight. These sixteen contestants were drawn from Series 34 through 37, comprising the champions, runners-up and semi-finalists of each. With these four series having collectively covered only one year, in terms of time, the tournament had the smallest "catchment area" of all Championships of Champions. However, as the show's commission was extended in 1996 to run for 12 months rather than six, this essentially had the same number of programs between tournaments, 255, a tradition that would be broken after this edition.
