Andrew Fisher was a viscount in and the champion of Series 1 of Letters and Numbers. Fisher amassed six wins and 415 points to become the #1 seed of Series 1; true to the formbook, he returned for the finals and defeated Esther Perrins, David Jones and finally his longtime mind-sport rival Naween Fernando to emerge as the first-ever winner of the show's grand prize.

Fisher's début score of 95, made during the first month of the show's history and featuring the first two nine-letter words in its history (FUMIGATES and NAUGHTIER), would remain the highest of all time and is more than 10% higher than Stephen Balment's and Allan Saldanha's 9-round joint record scores of 83 on Countdown.

In 2012, Fisher reappeared on Letters and Numbers to participate in its "Masters" series, a close equivalent to a Countdown Championship of Champions. Here, however, he was defeated in the quarter-final by Series 4 semi-finalist Toby Baldwin on the crucial conundrum STRIPHEAT.

A former UK resident and longtime Scrabble player, Fisher also contested two games of Countdown in Series 8 in 1986 and won the second series of the morning Countdown Masters programme, though the episode in which he partook has never been broadcast or released.
