Amey Deshpande was a originally a contestant in Series 42 as a wunderkinder, however was unlucky to come up against John Snedden whose 80 points stands as one of the highest scores in the history of the 9-round era. Due to his age, the usual rule about only having one shot was waived, so Amey was allowed to reapply at a point in the future.
In Series 47 Amey made a return to Countdown, taking part in the Juniors mini-tournament. Here, he came up against Andrew Hulme in the semifinal game and again found himself with the losing score.
Amey's career was not yet over, as on 16th January 2007, he made another return- a controversial move in some eyes by the producers- this time defeating Ian Volante in Series 56. He went on to attain octochamp status with 718 points; good for #4 seed.
