Episode Cats142, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 22, Episode 6, was a special episode broadcast on 11 February 2022, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 22. This episode contained the last appearance of regular Sean Lock, who had passed away from lung cancer in mid-August 2021. Similar to the 2021 Christmas Special, the credits were edited posthumously to feature the same still picture from that episode.
The Team Captains were the late Sean Lock and Jon Richardson, their teammates were Harry Hill and Rosie Jones respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.
The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of Rosie Jones, winning by 32 – 23 in a 7-rounder and they won a set of Countdown house plants.
Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Nick Mohammed (portraying his alter ego Mr. Swallow), and the lexicographer was Susie Dent. Actor Derek Martin (dressed as his character Charlie Slater from EastEnders) also made a special appearance where he threw and sprayed food at Harry from inside his prop, a voice-activated fridge.
Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:
1) During the Introduction, Rosie showed off her "Child of Achievement" award given to her in 2001 as well as a picture of her during the ceremony [1]. Later, Harry showed off his aforementioned fridge where it threw out whatever type of food he shouted at it, creating a huge mess on himself and the studio floor. He would do it again just before Round 6 and even asked Sean to try it out, but it failed and the former was on the receiving end instead.
2) In Round 1, the clock music was replaced by a rendition of it "played" on a harp by Jimmy.
3) During the 30 seconds in Round 3, Jimmy and Rachel played Tetherball in the centre of the studio, to which it ended with the ball "dislodging" and Jimmy being bounded up with the string.
NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.
NOTE 2: After the airing of this episode, Sean's name went viral on Twitter, with many fans and viewers alike paying tribute to him. This included Jon, who shared his reaction to watching the episode [2].
