Episode Cats77, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12, Episode 3 was a special episode broadcast on 27 January 2017, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12.
Acting Team Captain Johnny Vegas and Regular Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Jamie Laing and David O'Doherty who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.
The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of David O'Doherty, winning by 38 – 18 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown first aid kit.
Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Holly Walsh, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.
Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:
1) Jon Richarson attempted to break many official records all within 30 seconds in this episode but failed miserably; before the start of Round 1, he tried to arrange 18 pair of socks and place it in a basket but only managed 9; in Round 2, he tried to eat 40 peas but only managed 34; in Round 4, he tried to stack 28 toilet rolls vertically but only managed 15 before it collapsed; in Round 5 with the assistance of Jamie he tried to catch 15 sweets in his mouth but only managed 10. Later on after the 30 seconds in Round 5, Jimmy tried to replicate one attempt of the last record by throwing one sweet into Rachel's mouth to which he was successful.
2) In Round 1, the Countdown clock music was replaced by Jimmy tapping over glasses filled with solutions. Also, although Jamie misdeclared his word for six, as it was his first time playing, Jimmy was lenient, thus he got the points.
3) In Round 2, David's solution is assumed to be identical to Jon's as he was not asked to declare his solution.
4) During the 30 seconds in Round 3, in the style of football rivalry, five people rallied around both Johnny and Jon each with the theme "There can be only one Jon" and also insulted Jimmy by saying "The referee's a wanker."
5) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, Jimmy used a ray gun to enlarge his Countdown Mug, the Oxford Dictionary in Dictionary Corner and Rachel Riley's head, to which she wore a large ugly head to illustrate her displeasure until the end of the show. He also tried to do it to his private parts but decided against it.
NOTE: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.
A short segment of this episode was sampled in the 13 May 2021 episode of Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont's sitcom Meet the Richardsons.
