Episode Cats97

From Countdown

Episode Cats97, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16, Episode 1 was a special episode broadcast on 13 July 2018, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16. This was a special commemorating 100 Years of Woman Suffrage. This was also the first ever episode of Countdown in which all contestants and presenters were female.

Sara Pascoe and Roisin Conaty were the Acting Team Captains, along with Lolly Adefope and Jessica Hynes who were their teammates respectively, while Katherine Ryan was the host for this special.

The match saw Sara Pascoe, with the assistance of Lolly Adefope, winning by 37 – 17 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown motorbike.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Morgana Robinson (pretending to be Natalie Cassidy's character Sonia Fowler from EastEnders), and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Just before Round 5, the teams took part in a quiz involving trivia about Woman Suffrage and Sexism. Sara and Lolly won the quiz with a score of 3 – 2, thus five points were awarded to their team.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) As this episode was a celebration of Women's right to vote in Britain, the announcer and the model who introduced the prize were females. However, both were not credited.

2) After the 30 seconds was up in Round 1, as Katherine tried to levitate a pen, she did it to "Rachel" instead, and when she tried to get her down, she "fell" from the ceiling, landing beside Susie.

3) The clock music in Round 3 was replaced by the opening theme used on The Great British Bake Off composed by Tom Howe as Katherine went into a tent similar to that used on the show to the right of the studio. Pre-recorded lines from Sandi Toksvig were heard in the background, causing Katherine to swear using the f word. She eventually came out with a rainbow-flavoured cake baked in the shape of a unicorn and sliced the cake for everyone to eat except for Sara who is a vegan, to which she handed her a basil stalk instead. Later on in Round 6, the music was replaced by Proud Mary's "Rolling On The River" with Katherine joining in three performers in the centre of the studio. After the performance ended, confetti then shot out from behind them.

4) As the World Cup was being held when the show aired, "Katherine" showed off her skills at Football in the centre of the studio during the 30 seconds in Round 5.

5) Morgana (as Natalie) did make-up on Susie after Round 5 which caused her face to be painted. This would remain until the end of the show.

6) In Round 6, Lolly was not asked to show Jessica that she had the same word.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: CECIL generated identical targets, and in the same order as that of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 14, Episode 3 and the first two targets of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12, Episode 9, making this the third time on this version of the show that this has happened.
