Episode Cats108

From Countdown

Episode Cats108, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 17, Episode 3 was a special episode broadcast on 25 January 2019, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 17.

Regular Sean Lock and Acting Team Captain Richard Ayoade were the contestants, along with Joe Wilkinson and 8 Out of 10 Cats Regular Aisling Bea who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Richard Ayoade, with the assistance of Aisling Bea, winning by 35 – 22 in a 7-rounder and they won a Countdown leaf blower.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Tom Allen, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) During the 30 seconds in Round 1, Rachel, Jimmy and Fabio sat at a picnic table in the centre of the studio and played Spin the bottle, to which it initally stopped at Rachel and Jimmy but the former gave a dog to kiss the latter. Subsequently, it stopped on Fabio but possibly due to time constraints, the kiss was not carried out.

2) In Round 2, Aisling initially got to 451, but as she realised her mistake before giving the solution, at Jimmy's discretion points were given to her team.

3) In Round 3, the clock music was replaced by a Church bell rendition of it with three bell ringers accompanying Jimmy to pull the strings and ended with Jimmy being "pulled up" after the last bell ringer had done so and "falling" near his seat.

4) In view of Aisling's wigs as her props, during the first Teaser break, she went to switch clothes so that she would look identical to Rachel and swapped positions with her in Round 4. However, as she was "caught" doing the solutions for Rachel after her wig fell off, it was considered cheating, hence no points were awarded and her declaration is listed as a blank.

5) In Round 5, similar to two episodes in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16, it was dubbed a Tension Round; points were doubled, the clock music was replaced with a techno version of it coupled with sirens and a voice counting down from ten was heard as well. When the time was up, confetti shot out from behind the contestants, notably scaring Joe and Aisling. Thus, the maximum was worth 14 points in this case. This would later be used again during the Conundrum.

6) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, the scene where "Jimmy" and Fabio were was shot outside the studio in a swimming pool.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: Due to the celebrities continuously saying "Tension Round" before the Conundrum, Jimmy decided to make it one where it was worth 20 points instead of the usual 10. However, it was left unsolved, making this the first time on the show that bonus points in the Conundrum were not obtained.
