Episode 4473

From Countdown
Carol and Des with the 25th birthday cake

Episode 4473 was broadcast on 2 November 2007, as part of Series 57, and was a special episode commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first televised episode of Countdown. The first ever episode was shown immediately before the game, and notable celebrities were chosen to select the letters and numbers, rather than the contestants selecting them themselves. The episode also included special messages from Julie Andrews and Gordon Brown, a brief montage of out-takes, and a repeat of a Richard Whiteley anecdote from Episode 3688 as a tribute to Richard.

Chris Wills played Conor Travers, with Conor Travers winning 69 – 58. The game is notable as being one of very few 12-round games in Countdown history, and the only one to have been broadcast in Countdown's usual matinée slot. The episode also didn't feature a Dictionary Corner guest nor any Teatime Teasers, although Alison Heard was the lexicographer.

The rounds were selected by Susie Dent, who was on maternity leave at the time, Sir Terry Wogan, David Puttnam, Sir Patrick Moore, Noel Edmonds, Richard Attenborough, Sir Alex Ferguson, The Cast of Emmerdale, Kym Marsh & Malcolm Hebden, Rory Bremner (in character as Gordon Brown) and Amir Khan.
