Episode Cats57, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 9, Episode 2 was a special episode broadcast on 3 March 2016, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 9.
8 Out of 10 Cats regulars Sean Lock and Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Bob Mortimer and Holly Walsh who were their teammates, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.
The match saw Sean Lock, with the assistance of Bob Mortimer, winning by 33 – 23 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown magic set.
As Rachel Riley was unable to attend the recording, Claudia Winkleman took the role of the arithmetician for this episode. The Dictionary Corner guest was Isy Suttie, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.
Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:
1) In Round 1, the seventh letter was originally an I, but Claudia threw it out as she didn't like the combination, replacing it with the U. Had that not happened, the selection would have been OMGIRSIHU assuming the last two letters were still randomly chosen by her as per Holly's request. The maximum would here would have been worth seven points, one point less.
2) In Round 3, an audience member by the name of George, who was also seated closest to Claudia, was asked to place the letters by the latter. Also, during the 30 seconds in the same round, a German dancing band came to the centre of the studio and performed. In view of this as well, sausages and beer were served to the contestants after the time was up.
3) In Round 4, Claudia pretended to ring Carol Vorderman for help with the solution.
4) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, presumably, an Army sergeant came up and forced Jimmy to do warm-up exercises with two other personnel in the centre of the studio which was mixed with insults aimed at him.
NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.
NOTE 2: The conundrum was solved by Claudia, making this the first time on this version of the show that anyone besides the contestants has solved it.
