Alan Young was a contestant in Series 69, and an octochamp and quarter-finalist in Series 86. As of his second appearance, he was a business studies teacher from Paisley, Renfrewshire. He is also an Apterite. He has participated in a number of Co-events such as COLIN XI and COLIN XII, and ran Co:Glasgow 2015 in May of that year.
Young made his debut on Halloween 2013 where after winning three games, he was unseated in his fourth by Michael McLaughlin on a crucial conundrum whilst suffering from a migraine.
Young returned to the show virtually nine years later and kicked off his second stint with a victory over fellow Apterite, Joseph Bartram. But this time, Young's octochamp pursuit could not be stopped as he added a further seven wins to his tally which included four centuries. He achieved a high score of 117 in his fifth game, which also saw him spot two nines: MOLESTING and REPUTTING. Young wrapped up with a score of 90 in his eighth game, which was broadcast on a Saturday due to Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral causing his last five heats to be delayed by a day.
Young returned for the series finals on 20 December 2022, playing against Joe Dobinson. In a close game, Young took an early lead after successfully gambling on a six-small selection in the first numbers game. But Dobinson spotted LANGOUSTE for a crucial nine, after trailing two points behind to take a sixteen-point lead. This proved to be the fatal blow as Young couldn't catch up after that and bowed out with 83 points to Dobinson's 99 points, after an unsolved conundrum. Young amassed an overall total of 889 points in his Series 86 run. With his 2013 appearances, his overall total is 1,234 points.
Young was the first of eventual two octochamps crowned during Colin Murray’s tenure as temporary presenter.
