Nick Hewer (born February 17, 1944) was the presenter of Countdown from 9 January 2012 to 25 June 2021. He took over from Jeff Stelling at the start of Series 66.
Born in Swindon, Hewer started out his career in public relations before being hired to work for Amstrad, the company founded and run by Alan Sugar. Since 2005, he gained a TV following by being one of Sugar's two advisors on The Apprentice that he continued to do alongside Countdown until 2014.
On 16 November 2011, Hewer was announced as Stelling's replacement, virtually six months after Stelling announced his resignation from the role. [1]
Hewer eventually became the second longest serving presenter after Richard Whiteley.
In November 2020, Hewer took a break from Countdown during the second and (part of the) third COVID-19 lockdown in England. He was replaced by Colin Murray for the 2020 Christmas specials and some of Series 83.
On 7 December 2020, Hewer announced on his Twitter account that he would be stepping down as presenter of the programme in 2021 [2]. Before being replaced by Anne Robinson, his final episode was the Series 83 grand final that aired on 25 June 2021. During that edition, he was given a recorded tribute by Sugar during the Origins of Words slot.
And also, he is the only presenter to have hosted championships that didn't invite back contestants from the reigning series: when 30th Birthday Championship didn't invite back the chosen finalists from Series 67, when Championship of Champions XIV didn't invite back the chosen finalists from Series 73, and when Championship of Champions XV didn't invite back the chosen finalists from Series 79.
