He qualified for the series finals thanks to 6 wins, and met #1 seed Steven Briers in the quarter-final. Watson had a ten-point lead going into the conundrum, which nobody could solve. However, he lost in the semi-final to eventual runner-up Tony Warren on another crucial conundrum.

As of 2020, Watson is the only #8 seed to have won a quarter-final in the 15 round era.
