Series 84

Series 84 will be the next series of Countdown and the first series presented by Anne Robinson, following Nick Hewer's departure from the show. It will begin on 28 June 2021 and conclude in December. Recordings commenced on 24 May. One edition in September will be part of "Black To Front" and will feature an all-black on-screen cast. It is unknown if this episode will be a special episode or part of the normal series.

The series is set to see many celebrities making their debuts as guest in Dictionary Corner. From this series onwards, the long-outdated prize of twenty volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary has been abolished, but the series winner will still have their name engraved on the Richard Whiteley Memorial Trophy.

Another feature of the show set to be abolished at some point later on in this series is the clock starter button: after being repositioned twice, the clock will be started in the gallery instead of in the studio.

Rachel Riley announced her second pregnancy on 14 April 2021. It is currently unknown what effect this will have on the show; her first simply saw recordings of Series 82 pause for three and a half months. However, given that this meant that the show was only a month and a bit ahead of broadcast at the time of the first COVID-19 lockdown, combined with the fact that they will have to film an episode without her for Black Takeover Day, means they may film with her replacement during her second pregnancy.

Regardless of COVID-19 restrictions, studio audiences will not be returning for any future editions of the programme in any form; this is understood to be a cost-cutting exercise. [1] Meanwhile, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown has since filmed editions with socially-distanced audiences.
