Episode 601 was broadcast on 30 June 1987, and was the grand final of Championship of Champions III. It was a specially extended 50-minute edition.

Harvey Freeman played David Trace, with Harvey Freeman winning 115 – 107. The Dictionary Corner guest was Sally James, and the lexicographer was Della Thompson.

NOTE: This episode featured the highest winning and losing scores ever achieved under the 14-round format or in any game in the 9-round era. It was also the first ever episode where both contestants achieved a century (the next one was not until virtually fifteen years later).
