NOTE: The conundrum had two valid solutions: ASSISTANT and SATANISTS. However, the Contestant Guidelines say the conundrum will not be a plural ending in -S, thus making ASSISTANT a valid conundrum and SATANISTS not.

The tie worn by Richard Whiteley, which had been sent in by a viewer, made the following day's headlines – it spelled out the word "COUNTDOWN", but his microphone covered the first "O" and the desk "DOWN", thus leaving a certain four-letter word.
