Scott Mearns first appeared on Countdown in the very first game of series 41, beating incumbent champion Bobby Johnson 80-12 in what was seen by many as a phoenomenal debut performance. He went on to become an octochamp with an aggregate score of 510, the third-highest of the nine round era. He beat Simon Cooper in a closely-fought final on Christmas Day 1999, and returned the following week for Championship of Champions X, going on to beat Kate Ogilvie in the final and become only the fourth person to win the championship of champions unbeaten.
