Episode 2163
Episode 2163 was broadcast on 29 December 1997, and was the first preliminary of Championship of Champions IX.
Pete Cashmore played Paul Peters, with Pete Cashmore winning 55 – 45, after a tiebreak conundrum. The Dictionary Corner guest was Denis Norden, and the lexicographer was Mark Nyman.
NOTE: In Round 6, it went unnoticed that the letters selection only contained two vowels, which goes against the rule enforced since Series 30 that letters selections must contain at least three vowels.
This is the first, and to date only, time in the show's history that a contestant has trailed by 20 points with two regular rounds remaining, and gone on to win the match.
This episode was repeated on 25 July 2000.
