A Tribute to Countdown: 3000 and Counting
A Tribute to Countdown: 3000 and Counting was a special 35-minute documentary which aired on Friday 27 April 2001 at 5:25pm, after Episode 3000 (albeit with Pet Rescue in between). It featured a potted history of the show and some rather unlikely Countdown fans such as Chris Moyles and Arthur Smith talking about the show.
Sue Perkins narrated, and there were also appearances from Richard Whiteley, Carol Vorderman, Gyles Brandreth, Terry Wogan, Tina Baker, Angela Rippon, and Marcel Stellman.
The tribute was criticised by some fans: it featured a scathing review of Calendar Countdown from Whiteley, especially the performances of Ted Moult and Denise McFarland-Cruickshanks (though he did not mention them by name); it did not acknowledge the existence of Cathy Hytner (other than Vorderman describing the initial presentation structure as "Richard and seven other people"); the show also misattributed Whiteley's yawn from Episode 588 as being in the Series 1, which also was looked upon negatively.
This episode was repeated on 17 May 2001, due to the rained-off cricket.
