Series 83

Series 83 is the next series of Countdown and the eighteenth series presented by Nick Hewer, with some episodes presented by Colin Murray. It will be preceded by three special episodes after the finals of Series 82, and will run from January to June 2021. Recordings began in October 2020.

Despite England being placed in lockdown for the second time in November 2020, filming of Countdown went ahead, citing a government exemption for TV recordings to continue. However, Nick Hewer will temporarily step down as host while he shields at home. Colin Murray will cover for Hewer as host during this period, as announced on Hewer's Twitter feed, thus making this the first regular series to have more than one host: the only exception in the past being 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16. Hewer announced his retirement from the show in December 2020, and his final episode date is not yet known.

Social distancing guidelines introduced in the second half of the previous series, including a ban on studio audiences, will remain in place for the foreseeable future – at least until April 2021 – to suppress COVID-19. It remains unknown when or how these will be lifted, but are likely to be overseen throughout the entirety of this series.
