Annie Humphries was a finalist in Series 76, who became an octochamp in Series 75. She was a retired teacher from Basildon, Essex and is thought to be the first laryngectomee to appear on the show and speaks through a voice prosthesis.
Humphries debuted on 5 August 2016 and achieved three centuries during her octorun to qualify for the December 2016 finals. However, she was unable to attend the finals' recording dates. In a December 2016 tweet, the show's producers confirmed that Humphries would instead be added to the list of people eligible for the June 2017 finals [1].
Humphries then qualified for these finals as the No. 5 seed. In her quarter-final, she prevailed over No. 4 seed Elliott Mack by beating him in three letters rounds with findings of PRIMULA, CLASSIER and ROMANIZE to seal victory prior to the conundrum.
She thus advanced to the semi-finals against No. 1 seed, Stephen Read. Here, she suffered her only defeat as the latter amassed 115 points and maxed all but two rounds. When filming her finals episodes, Humphries invited Cammy Lovatt (who later became an octochamp in Series 94) back to the studio.
Humphries was invited to participate in Championship of Champions XV, but was unable to attend due to her holiday to Turkey.
