Susie Dent MBE (born 19 November 1964) is a lexicographer on Countdown. Her first appearance in Dictionary Corner was on 29 June 1992 as at the time, the role of lexicographer rotated regularly between a group of members of the Oxford University Press (OUP) – such as Richard Samson and then Alison Heard – and occasionally members of the Countdown production team: Mark Nyman and Damian Eadie. During Series 50, Dent eventually became a recurring member of the on-screen team by appearing in all but fifteen episodes. She then adjudicated every episode from 24 August 2004 until 9 May 2007 when the late Michael Wylie stepped in under the pseudonym, Susie Gent, to cover a bout of illness. On 5 November 2007, she left for her second maternity leave with Alison Heard stepping in for her and seeing off the remainder of Series 57 (including its series grand final).
She returned to the programme on 6 February 2008 and has performed virtually all lexicography work since then (aside from Lemn Sissay being the lexicographer for the Black to Front edition on 10 September 2021 as a one-off). Whenever Dent was unavailable for filming from July 2021 until December 2022, there is no longer a substitute: when she was absent for thirty shows during Anne Robinson's tenure due to COVID-19 and for six shows near the end of Series 86, the celebrity guests adjudicated the words in her place. Due to her narrating the programme's contact details before the credits roll, Dent was still credited in her absences.
She oversaw the final episodes presented by Richard Whiteley, Des Lynam, Carol Vorderman and Des O'Connor, Jeff Stelling, Nick Hewer and Anne Robinson. Dent has appeared in 6,137 episodes and eventually has had more appearances than anyone else in the show's history. Starting from Series 72, Dent was credited as a co-presenter alongside Rachel Riley.
Dent's close association with Countdown has been acknowledged through variations of her name having been featured as conundrums on many occasions, some of them even incorporating her forename or surname. Some of the following are:
- SUSISDENT used on 29 March 1996.
- SUSIEDANT used on 22 March 2005.
- SUSIEPONG used on 10 August 2012.
- SUSIADENT used on 27 August 2015.
- DENTSCENE used on 8 September 2015.
- RINGSUSIE used on 22 April 2016.
- HUGSIDENT used on 7 November 2016.

Starting from Autumn 2007 during Series 57, Dent was given a regular slot called "Origins of Words" in which she explains the derivations of well-known words or phrases. As well as being a native English speaker, she is fluent in French and German and often makes comments on the etymologies of words derived from those two languages. Also, she was called upon to assist Dictionary Corner guests like Geoffrey Durham and Paul Zenon during their magic tricks. Away from Countdown, Dent authored a series of annual Language Reports for the OUP between 2003 and 2007 and continues to write about the ongoing evolution of the English language. She has two daughters: Lucy (born 11 February 2000) and Thea (born 22 October 2007).
She has also appeared as the lexicographer in every episode of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. On 3 July 2015, she finally appeared as a contestant.
On 29 June 2017, Dent celebrated her 25th anniversary as lexicographer as that day's programme featured several tributes and gifts to her: Colin Murray reading a poem on her behalf and Nick Hewer presenting her with a postcard signed by Arsène Wenger (the manager of her favoured football club, Arsenal).
On 14 June 2024, Dent was awarded an MBE for services to language and literature in the King's Birthday Honours List.
