Episode 1718

From Countdown
This episode introduced the blue variant of the "wings" set, replacing the red version used between Series 22 and 30.

Episode 1718 was broadcast on 1 January 1996, as part of Series 31.

Janet Wilding played Glyn Wigley, with Glyn Wigley winning 60 – 56. The Dictionary Corner guest was Geoffrey Durham, and the lexicographer was Mark Nyman.

Nyman introduced the 9th edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary in this episode, mentioning that new words such as SLAPPER and VIDEOFIT would now be allowed. This was also the first episode to feature the short-lived "extra intensity" clock music, the blue variant of the "wings" set design, the triangular title logo (though the light-up banner above the clock in the studio continued to display the previous logo for a short time), and the title music that remains in use today.
