Series 21 ran from December 1990 to March 1991, and began with Championship of Champions V. The twenty-first of 53 series presented by Richard Whiteley was won by Barry Grossman.

The chronological order in which the eight finalists of Series 21 appeared in the heats was exactly the opposite order in which they were listed in the seed table, from Jackie McLeod (#8 seed) near the beginning of the series to Lew Schwarz (#1 seed) near the end.

This series contained four draws, the highest total ever; possibly as a result of the impact this created on the seedings and point totals, the mechanism of drawn matches being replayed on the following day was scrapped in the following series in favour of the use of tie-break conundrums.

In Series 21, players were ranked by total number of points, including winning, drawing, and losing scores.

This led to Lew Schwarz's incredible octochamp score of 547, which included two draws. Gillian Tickle and John Arfon were also involved in draws, boosting their scores considerably.
