Jamie Wing during his eighth game.

Jamie Wing was an octochamp in and the runner-up of Series 81. He was a Sixth Form Student from Godalming, Surrey. He is also an Apterite.

Aged 17 at the time of broadcasts, Wing made his debut on 22 November 2019 against six-time winner and fellow Apterite Paul Anderson and won the game on a tiebreak conundrum. He then put in seven sensational performances with six centuries. He wrapped up his heat run with 899 points (just one point short of joining the 900 club) to become an octochamp — the last of a record nine to become in a series. He also became the second octochamp following Toby McDonald in Series 78, that was born in the 21st century.

Ten days later, Wing returned for the series finals and started his finals run against No. 7 seed Tom Silverlock. Wing proved unstoppable here by scoring in every letters and numbers round, and pulling away with a very good six-small solve plus a spot of ROUTINISE. His only no-score occurred in the conundrum that Silverlock beat him to, but a strong 121 points booked Wing a place in the semi-finals. He next squared off against Paul Nixon, the No. 3 seed; though the game's score was dead level from the first break straight up to before the final letters, PACEMEN and a one-away solve on a complex six-small selection meant that Wing avoided a crucial conundrum and confirmed a finals spot against No. 1 seed James Haughton.

In the final, Wing played close to Haughton. They levelled in the first two letters rounds until Haughton nicked the lead with the first numbers round. Wing stayed close to Haughton throughout the game until it was game over by an easy last numbers round. But as a last consolation, he unscrambled TREATRASH to EARTHSTAR to finish in the runner-up position with 95 points. Wing amassed 1,206 points in his run.

He did not participate in Championship of Champions XVI, thus preserving his record of ten wins out of eleven. But he permanently stands as the first ever series runner-up that was born in the 21st century.
