Paul James was a contestant in Series 38, an octochamp in and the champion of Series 67, and a participant in Championship of Champions XIV. He was a security guard from Brampton, Cumbria.

Heat games
James originally appeared on the show in April 1998, aged 29. Returning early in Series 67, he achieved four centuries in his octochamp run to return for the finals as number one seed.
Finals
A strong finish helped James defeat Grant Waters in the quarter-finals, and survived an unsolved crucial conundrum in his semi-final against Rose Boyle to book his place in the grand final, where he defeated Heather Styles to win the last full series to be recorded at the Granada Studios.
Championship of Champions XIV
James returned in 2016 for Championship of Champions XIV, but lost in the first round to Series 71 champion Dan McColm.

In September 2001, James appeared on and won an episode of The Weakest Link. He also appeared on Rebound in November 2016, and Eggheads on 11 September 2017 with Series 6 champion Darryl Francis, as part of the "Bramflicks" team. James reappeared on Eggheads on 30 March 2023, as part of the "Fine Young Bramptonians" team.
