The first ever shot with Anne Robinson as the host. She first appeared on Countdown in Dictionary Corner back in 1987.

Series 84 is the current series of Countdown and the first presented by Anne Robinson, following Nick Hewer's retirement. It began on 28 June 2021 and will conclude in December. Recordings commenced on 24 May.

One edition on 10 September, as part of Channel 4's "Black To Front", featured an all-black on-screen cast consisting of host Sir Trevor McDonald, lexicographer Lemn Sissay and arithmetician Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon; the contestants were returnee Jodine Lawrence and new-comer Samuel Williams, and the game determined who would play in the following episode.

Due to Channel 4's live coverage of Friday Practice and Qualifying sessions of the 2021 British Grand Prix, no edition of Countdown was shown on 16 July. When the series resumed on 19 July, Susie Dent missed ten episodes due to COVID-19 close-contact isolation; celebrity guests, Rachel Parris and Richard Coles respectively, adjudicated words in her place. This was Dent's first absence from the show since 2008. She was still credited in her non-appearances due to her narrating the show's contact details before the credits.

Rachel Riley announced her second pregnancy on 14 April 2021. During her first pregnancy, recordings of Series 82 accelerated and then paused for three and a half months. However, on this particular occasion, Riley will be temporarily replaced with a stand-in presenter while she is on maternity leave: indeed, she implied during Episode 7557 that she wouldn't be there for the finals. Her temporary stand-in presenter is yet to be confirmed, and may or may not necessarily be Imafidon.

The series is set to see many celebrities making their debuts as guest in Dictionary Corner. From this series onwards, the long-outdated prize of twenty volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary has been axed, but the series winner will still have their name engraved on the Richard Whiteley Memorial Trophy. Another feature of the show that has been removed is the clock starter button: to accommodate for Anne's height, the clock is now started in the gallery.

The 7,549th episode, broadcast on 12 July, marked the first-ever all-female episode of the regular weekday version of Countdown, after more than 38 and a half years on the air. The first-ever all-female episode of any version was on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, first shown on 13 July 2018.

Riley celebrated her 3,000th edition of the programme on 20 August 2021.

As a result of Paralympic coverage, the episode on 24 August 2021 aired at 3:15pm rather than 2:10pm, the first time since Episode 3959, and 26 August 2021 aired at 3:10pm, the first time since Episode 6446.

Regardless of COVID-19 restrictions, studio audiences will not be returning for any future editions of the regular programme; this is understood to be a cost-cutting exercise. [1] Meanwhile, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown has since filmed editions with socially-distanced audiences.

Apterites Roger Peak, Juliet Hedge, Florence Cappleman-Lynes, Patrick Welsh, Jason Dias, Shireen Hibs, Mike Lee, Ryan Sutton and Steven Grady have participated so far, with Apterites due to take part in this series including James Nguyen, Rachael Montgomery, Adam Beach and Oliver Walker, though it is noted that Sutton became a member after the filming of his preliminary games.
