Series 77 was the twelfth series presented by Nick Hewer. It ran from 3 July 2017 to 22 December 2017 and was won by Tom Chafer-Cook.

Series 77 was the first to feature the "new" blue set. A photo revealing this set's design (later revealed to be a screencap from the closing credits of Episode 6619, broadcast on 7 July 2017) was tweeted on Rachel Riley's Twitter feed in April 2017; it introduced new brown podiums, which turn pink before the start of a crucial conundrum, and changes to the colour of the floor-mounted platform while preserving the same blue background used from Series 60 through 76. [1] Coupled with that, 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 11, Episode 3 featured the new studio in June 2017.

This series also saw Rachel Riley's 2,000th episode (excluding appearances on Catsdown), a milestone that was celebrated in the episode broadcast on 23 November 2017 with Nick Hewer's presentation of a bouquet and cake to Riley. [2]

From the beginning of the series to the Grand Final, the show was broadcast on every weekday as a result of less televised coverage of sport, with the exception of three Fridays on which Channel 4 instead broadcast live Formula 1. Specifically, the programme was off the air on 14 July, 25 August and on 24 November due to the channel's coverage of the British, Belgian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix respectively. When Channel 4 transmitted the second practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix on 15 September, Countdown was shown at a record-early 12:40pm.

Series 77 broke several records on Countdown. Not only was it the third series after Series 47 and Series 76 to have all eight finalists as octochamps, it was also the first time in 15 years since Series 47 to have all eight octochamps appear in the same series. (Annie Humphries was an octochamp in series 75, but was unable to make the finals, and was allowed to compete in series 76 finals instead.) This also meant that 2017 was the first year that all sixteen finalists were octochamps.

Series 23, 25, 45, 63, 68, 77, 81, and 82 are the only series in which the finals went completely true to the seedings (i.e. the higher seed always beat the lower seed, with no upsets).

Since Series 60, players are sorted by number of wins, then by number of points. Points from both wins and losses count. Points from sudden death conundrums are not counted, and players with the same number of wins and points are sorted by the number of conundrums correctly guessed, then highest individual score.

NOTE: Due to the wrongful disallowals of their offerings of DEFAMOUS and SHAMER respectively, Eoin Jackson's and Michael Pfeffer's respective totals should have been 786 and 776 points respectively; however, the seeding order was not affected by either of these errors.
