Matthew Shore was the runner-up of Series 54.
He first appeared on 17 February 2006 where he beat Alexia McCluskey 109 – 55. He won his next seven games including scores of 116, 115 and 126 to become an octochamp with an impressive total of 850 points. He returned for the final rounds, where he defeated fellow octochamps Michael Bowden and Jon Corby on a crucial conundrum. In the final he faced #1 seed Conor Travers and for the second time in history, two octochamps with at least 850 points each faced off. Travers was impressive with spots like NEMESIS, POLONIES and HETAIRAS which meant that Travers won the game without having to face a crucial conundrum. Shore unscrambled GELIGNITE first, but Travers took the game 98 – 83.
He returned the very next week for Championship of Champions XII, where he defeated Chris Cummins in first round round on a crucial conundrum, setting up a match with another series champion Mark Tournoff. Shore scored in every letters round, including two nines; PAINTIEST and HERNIATES but Tournoff got both these nines and crucial points on the numbers meaning that it the game was poised for the highest ever Countdown scoreline 117 – 114 in Shore's favour going into the conundrum SOLILOQUY which Tournoff solved, relegating Shore to the then highest ever losing score, surpassing David Williams's score of 111 against Chris Wills in the Championship of Champions XI.
