The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the filming of new episodes of all versions of Countdown proving impossible. This page details the repeats that were shown during a 14-week long hiatus during the second quarter of 2020, after the stockpile of recorded episodes of Series 82 ran out.

Channel 4 aired all but two episodes (due to request from Chris Hawkins not to show his two appearances) of the 30th Birthday Championship, with some rounds and interactions excised. From 29 June to 7 August, Championship of Champions XIV and Championship of Champions XV were repeated.

Notably, the repeat of the 30th Birthday Championship second round match between Innis Carson and Kirk Bevins did not show the first of two conundrums due to the definition of its solution having some relation to the pandemic, meaning that it looked like it was not decided on a tie-break conundrum. A similar situation can be found in the first episode of Series 73, where the first two conundrums were cut from final broadcast to save time.

Series 85 was the only series to be presented entirely by Anne Robinson. It began on 3 January 2022 and concluded on 17 June 2022 with the No. 1 seed Dan Byrom triumphing in the final over the No. 2 seed Matt O'Connor.

Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon who served as substitute arithmetician for the last 9 episodes of the previous series carried over her role for the first 51 episodes of Series 85 while Rachel Riley was on maternity leave during the recordings. Riley returned on 15 March after a 94-day absence on daytime Countdown.

On 2 May 2022, it was announced that Anne Robinson had stood down as presenter of Countdown with immediate effect after filming 265 episodes. [1] Her last show was transmitted in the following series on 13 July before being succeeded by Colin Murray.

Apterites Adrian Fletcher, Dan Byrom, Gabriel Thallon, Andrew Hamblen, Robbie Pender, Jim Athey, Matt O'Connor and Liam Moss appeared on the series, though Fletcher became a member after recording his preliminary matches and Moss became a member after his episode aired.

COVID-19 affected the end of this series; Dr Linda Papadopoulos only recorded three episodes due to her filming day being curtailed after so many planned contestants dropped out due to the virus that they ran out, and Susie Dent was absent from the final five preliminaries and the finals due to having it.

The grand final of this series was the fifth series since Series 78 to feature a finalist who had a previous run on the show.

Due to reasons beyond Channel 4's control, the last preliminary match was withdrawn and remains unbroadcast though it is known that Steven Etherington won this game by a score of 88 – 57. The cancelled episode was replaced by a repeat of the final of Championship of Champions XV.

Along with since Series 40, 55 and 80, this series was not disrupted by sports coverage.

The finals of this series went completely true to the seedings (i.e. the higher seed always beat the lower seed, with no upsets).
